Before I headed back to Portland OR and Stumptown Improv Festival with both Big Bang and North Coast, The Portland Mercury put out their not-to-miss show recomendations. In such an incredible lineup of shows, i am absolutely honored to see both of my teams on this short list!

I’m sure everyone is sick of how much I love North Coast, so I will refrain from (THEY’RE THE BEST! SEE BOTH SHOWS! SEE BOTH SHOWS!) pointing out anything other than the fact that North Coast is coming at us this year with their own version of improv Hamilton, “a full, factually accurate improv set to satisfy your hunger for hip-hop history.” I can’t even imagine, but only North Coast could pull something like that off.

North Coast Residency in Sarasota: Smothers Brothers, SunCoast View & More.

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining North Coast on the road in Sarasota Florida for 10 days.  We were hosted by the amazing Florida Studio Theatre and we started our week off at the 10th Annual Sarasota Improv Festival!

Some Festival Highlights for me include:

  • Doing a show with the legendary Smothers Brothers! After an in-person interview with Tom and Dick Smothers, North Coast got to do a performance of ANYBODY: The Smothers Brothers, with the two of them right there in the front row. Both brothers could not be more funny or more gracious. The whole thing was an absolutely surreal and emotional experience.

  • An incredible performance - to a Standing ovation! - with my improv team, Big Bang!

  • I got to perform in the Festival All Stars Show with some incredible performers from all over the world...

Once the festival had calmed down and most of the out of towners went home, we stuck around! I had the pleasure of teaching some awesome workshops with the incredible Sarasota-based performers.

Hey, Mom! I'm On TV!

In promoting our Residency shows, I got interviewed on local ABC affiliate, the SunCoast View! Meg and I answered questions from the host and then we improvised a song. The whole thing happened so fast but we had such an incredible time and the hosts were nothing but gracious!

North Coast closed off the week with performances back at Florida Studio Theatre again. This time, I got to play in a show about Martin Luther King. Not only was the audience laughing, but we were all crying as well. At one point, the whole crowd was holding hands in a huge circle while we sang a song called "I Have A Dream." Now this is what improv is all about - and why I love the ANYBODY show so much.

The whole week was an absolute treat and a reminder to me that I get to do what I love as my career. On a daily basis, I get to travel, make people laugh, and teach improvisers the skills I am most passionate about. I'm very lucky to be leading this creative life. Thank you to Will Luera and everyone at Florida Studio Theatre!

Comedy Cake Interview with Meg Reilly & Rachel Rosenthal of North Coast!

Comedy Cake Interview with Meg Reilly & Rachel Rosenthal of North Coast!

NORTH COAST’s residency at the Caveat, New York’s newest and undeniably unique speakeasy, is currently in full swing. The NYC improv theater team are bringing audiences weekly performances of their hip-hop musical ANYBODY throughout the month of March and you should be jazzed to check it out. Here is an interview with Rachel Rosenthal and Meg Reilly about the latest run of shows!

North Coast's ANYBODY in a Limited 5 Show Off-Broadway Run!

Last month in my newsletter, I mentioned heading Off-Broadway with Blank! The Musical (more info on that extended run coming soon!) Well, now North Coast is getting in on the fun. You can read all of the details on Broadway World

I can't emphasize enough how much this show and opportunity means to me.

I'm about to come up on my 7 year anniversary with North Coast.  Unlike any other project - this team has my blood, sweat and tears in it. I've helped build this team from the bottom up. From an indie improv group scrounging for free rehearsal space... to a touring improv company... now here we are: trying to bust into the professional theater space. If this run goes well, it could mean A LOT for the future of this team. Also - not for nothing - it's one of the greatest shows I've ever been a part of. What I love about Anybody is that the shows have heart in addition to humor.

ANYBODY: An Improvised Historical Hip Hop'era

ANYBODY, North Coast's improvised historical hip-hopera, is coming to the historic Connelly Theatre in the East Village for a limited 5-show run this September!

I will personally be in these performances:
Wednesday, September 20 @ 8:00pm
Friday, September 22 @ 8:00pm

North Coast: Comedy Tour to Europe!

It's the #NoCoEuroTowe've all been waiting for...

North Coast in Reykjavik!

After that... we are off to Reykjavik, Iceland for the Reykjavik International Improv Festival!  I'm not sure when our set is, to be honest, but if you have friends in the area - just tell them to hit me up and I'll get them the scoop. I'm super honored to be teaching a scenework workshop while I'm in Iceland, and North Coast will be doing a workshop as well!

I cannot wait. Let's do this, Europe!

(SOLD OUT) Intro to Hip Hop Improv Workshop (3 hour)

I honestly don’t have enough good things to say about this class. I was fortunate enough to have Rachel Rosenthal and Doug Widick as my teachers and those two are wonderful people who are obvious hip-hop/improv heads. The class, without a doubt, made me a better freestyler and a better improvisor.

Learn how to set yourself up, find your flow, and weave your rapped verses in and out of your improv scene work.

Considered musical improv trailblazers among their peers, Hip Hop Comedy team, North Coast was named one of the “Top 10 Comedy Shows″ by Time Out NY. A Rave Review of North Coast in Portland OR!

NorthCoast-Stumptown-2016-Ryan Kelly Coil.jpg

Rachel and some of the North Coast cast performed for the second year in a row at the Stumptown Improv Festival in Portland Oregon.  Check out the Rave Review of North Coast's performance. The title of the review starts with "Holy Shit! North Coast!" so... we think they liked it.

I have a feeling that North Coast is either really popular (and I just don’t know about it because I live really far from New York) or they are about to blow the f*ck up soon. ...if you get a chance to see North Coast, see North Coast!

Intro To Hip Hop Improv Comedy Workshop! (DCM Special)

Two for one! I can’t recommend this class enough if you’re a person who likes having a good time and becoming awesome.
— Max Ash, UCB Maude Night

DCM IS HERE!

We are so looking forward to this weekend and hanging out with all of the amazing talent coming in from around the country to participate in the Del Close Marathon at UCB! North Coast has been playing in the festival for many years and will do so again this year on Saturday night! In celebration of DCM, we'd like to offer a workshop to anyone who'll be around this weekend. This workshop is NOT in any way affiliated officially with DCM. If you'd like to take a DCM workshop (and you should!) check out the info here

North Coast featured on Splitsider

Sweet! North Coast was featured on the comedy powerhouse website, Splitsider, talking about the intersection between comedy and music.

“Widick and North Coast task themselves with building entire hip-hop songs and scenes based off a single word suggestion from an audience member — like the word “milk,” for instance. Even though the rotating cast of ten view themselves as comedians first, music is the glue that keeps their comedic appeal and jokes intact.”

Village Voice: Recommends 2 of my shows this week!

No, I’m not on Letterman. But, TWO of my shows are listed in this best indie comedy shows of the week in the Village Voice: BeerProv (Mon 5/25) & North Coast (Sat 5/23)!

“A lot of shows proclaim, ‘You’ve never seen anything quite like it.’ In North Coast’s case, that is actually true."
